For the love of John

August 16th, 2012

There I was happily browsing the net (serious hero research) when I realised how many diverse people share the same name. Since romance heroes need a name that’s theirs without fail, the sort of name that defines them right off the bat and gives you an insight into the sort of person they are (or will be) this sharing concept is damned annoying!

Or is it? Some names are very common, but when you look at the people who have a particular name they’re very different. Intriguingly different ;-)

Today I’ve chosen to turn the spotlight on John, and just look what I’ve come up with!

John Cusack, Jonathan Lapaglia, John Abraham, John Butler, John Mayer,

also… John Cleese, Jon Favreau, John Hannah,¬†and (of course) Johnny Depp. Did I forget anyone? Do tell ;-)

I’ve read 100′s of romances (no it’s true ;o) and there are always what I call the “super hero” names cropping up. Luke, Rick, Cole, Caleb, Matt, Max, Marcus. Nothing wrong of course, just that the poor old “Peter’s, David’s and Gerald’s” never get a mention! Caroline x

lol, my current release has a super hero name :-) I like that! And I think you’re right about some everyday names getting overlooked. I never get to choose mine because they ‘arrive’ already named and refuse to change just because something else would suit me better.

  2. Hi, I’m a John and I actually changed my name to it – from Clive (I was christened Clive John but called Clive by everybody). I’m much more comforatble as a John and yet still feel more individualistic than if I had remained a Clive. I reckon both those names instanrtly suggest a type of person so it depends whether you want your hero to be a basic, reliable, handy, thorough type of guy or a chap with a monocle!

Hi John! I just adore your description of what John is like when compared to Clive. I definitely don’t want a chap with in a monocle in any of my books so Clive has been struck from the pool of possibilities. FWIW I have a brother named John and he’s a basic, reliable, handy type of guy ;-)
